The Calgary Humane Society (CHS) has temporarily suspended animal intake at their emergency shelter due to an overwhelming number of admissions. Currently caring for 350 animals—almost double their capacity—the CHS faces challenges exacerbated by economic hardships, inflation, and a shortage of pet-friendly housing.
Executive Director Carrie Fritz likens the situation to a crisis faced by animal welfare organizations over a decade ago. Not only Calgarians but also residents from outside the city are surrendering pets they can no longer care for. Recently, a breeder facing eviction sought refuge in the CHS parking lot, preventing puppies from enduring summer heat in a vehicle. While adopting animals from the CHS helps, potential adopters must understand the responsibilities involved. The CHS advises consulting veterinarians about costs, considering pet insurance, and responsibly sourcing pets. Those unable to commit long-term can apply as foster parents or donate directly.
