Several charges have been filed in a southern Alberta investigation into the illegal slaughter and sale of sheep, goats, and beef.

The RCMP’s livestock unit began the probe in November 2023. Sheep and goats were bought at markets, taken to rural properties, unlawfully slaughtered, and the meat sold in Calgary. Inspectors closed seven Halal grocery stores and revoked two on-farm slaughter licenses.

Raed Alnajar, 48; Waeel Alhamawi, 35; Amer Alhamawi, 35; and Tareq Alhamawi, 41, all from Calgary, face charges including failure to inspect animals prior to slaughter and dealing in uninspected meat.
