The Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) urges pet owners to seek assistance during business hours after ten animals were abandoned outside the shelter on Saturday morning.
Staff found a dog tied to a tree, an adult cat, two kittens, and a box with six rats, likely left between Friday night and Saturday morning.WHS CEO Jessica Miller noted that animals are abandoned once or twice a month, but rarely in such numbers overnight. A note indicated the owner was fleeing domestic violence, and WHS hopes to reunite her with the pets through their Safe Pet program, which holds animals until owners are in a stable state. The shelter is currently full, making intake challenging. Miller encourages people to contact the intake department during the day to discuss their situation and explore other resources.
