List of Threatened Species Increases by 1,000, but Conservation Efforts Offer Hope

Over 45,000 species are now threatened with extinction, an increase of 1,000 from last year, due to climate change, invasive species, and human activities like illicit trade and infrastructural expansion, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The latest Red List, marking its 60th year, highlights at-risk species such as the Copiapoa cacti, Bornean elephant, and Gran Canaria giant lizard. Despite the grim outlook, conservation efforts have led to success stories, including the Iberian lynx, whose population has grown from 62 mature individuals in 2001 to over 2,000 today.
