Black bears are shown begging for food from tourists at Marineland, Niagra Falls, Ontario in 2011.

Last week history was made when Marineland was ordered to pay $85,000 in fines months after it was found guilty under Ontario's animal cruelty laws of charges related to its care of three black bears. This highlights the ongoing need for vigilant enforcement of animal protection laws and our continued efforts alongside other animal welfare and animal rights activists to put an end to the cruelty of captivity in this type of park or roadside zoos once and for all.

Humane Canada has strongly advocated to end the cruelty of using animals for entertainment. We’ve been instrumental in the passing of Bill S-203, which banned the captivity of cetaceans in 2019 and have supported legislation to end the captivity of elephants and great apes.
