The Montreal SPCA is grappling with a significant increase in animal abandonments this year, particularly among dogs, who are being surrendered 35% more than last year.
With the approaching July 1 moving day exacerbating the situation, the shelter is already at full capacity, according to executive director Laurence Massé. She cites a 21% rise in abandonments in the first four months of 2024 compared to the same period last year, attributing the trend partly to high living costs.
To cope with the influx, the SPCA has expanded its staff, including hiring new animal attendants, and is seeking donations to cover rising expenses. They urge the community to adopt or foster animals to alleviate overcrowding and meet the growing demand for care.
