New treatment found for fatal cat infection

Dr. Courtney Andrews is thrilled to announce that a treatment has been discovered for a previously fatal type of coronavirus infection in cats.

Cats are particularly sensitive to a class of viruses known as coronaviruses. While most cats carry a less severe form called feline enterocoronavirus (FECV), a small number can develop feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV), which was previously considered terminal. FIPV doesn’t appear to be contagious, so infected cats don’t need isolation. Diagnosing FIPV is challenging, relying on symptoms, lab results, and biopsies. Recent trials of antiviral drugs have shown promising results, leading to complete remission in many cats. Although these drugs aren’t widely available in North America, Canadian veterinarians now have legal access to some FIPV treatments, offering hope for affected cats.
