Outcast alpacas form unlikely bond at British Columbia animal sanctuary

Published May 26, 2024 at 4:00am

Gemmy, the blind alpaca, has faced a lonely existence, rejected by other animals due to her lack of sight. At the Llama Sanctuary in Tappen, B.C., where she resides, Gemmy’s blindness causes her to move her head awkwardly, occasionally bumping into fellow herd members. Despite her challenges, Gemmy’s caregivers, including Llama Sanctuary co-founder David Chapman, have worked tirelessly to improve her quality of life. They arranged for Gemmy’s mother to stay at the sanctuary for a year to nurse her, and later paired Gemmy with a surrogate when her mother returned to the home farm. Unfortunately, Gemmy never found acceptance within the herd.

However, hope arrived in the form of Eddie, another alpaca surrendered to the sanctuary. Eddie’s fleece had become so heavy from neglect that he could no longer walk. Initially depressed, he gradually regained strength under the sanctuary’s care. Gemmy’s situation may finally change with Eddie’s arrival, offering her a chance at companionship and a brighter future.
