Romeo the Former Circus Lion Finds Freedom in New South African Home

Published May 17, 2024 at 4:00am

Romeo, once a captive circus lion forced to perform in France, has finally found solace in his new South African sanctuary. After enduring confinement and exploitation, this five-year-old white lion now roams free, thanks to the tireless efforts of animal heroes.

Until 2023, Romeo’s life was a tragic tale. Kept in a cramped cage within a truck, he faced a bleak existence when not performing. But in August of that year, Belgian wild animal sanctuary Natuurhulpcentrum intervened, rescuing him from his plight.

When Romeo was saved, he was a mere shadow of his potential self—underweight and plagued by infections. The compassionate Natuurhulpcentrum team provided specialized care, offering him a chance at a new life filled with freedom and dignity.
