Search Underway for Entangled Humpback Whale off B.C. Coast

Published Jul 3, 2024 at 4:00am

Federal rescuers are searching for an entangled three-year-old humpback whale named Vector in the Salish Sea, highlighting a growing issue as whale populations recover from commercial hunting.

Vector was last seen near Campbell River off Vancouver Island, with ropes entangled around its dorsal fin and body. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) marine mammal coordinator Paul Cottrell expressed concern about the potential lethality of the entanglement. Since 2019, DFO has recorded 15 to 30 whale entanglements annually, mostly involving humpbacks. The public is urged to report sightings of Vector, identifiable by its unique dorsal fin, while maintaining a 200-meter distance. This search aims to raise awareness about whale entanglements, many of which go undetected.
