People seeking addiction treatment in B.C. are often forced to choose between their pets and their health, warns Paws for Hope, a charity supporting low-income pet owners.
Since early 2023, nearly 150 people have been turned away from temporary pet foster care, essential for accessing drug treatment programs that last around 90 days. Executive Director Kathy Powelson highlights the distress this causes, as many delay or forego treatment without safe places for their pets. Despite some shelters offering two-week fosters, the gap leaves both people and pets suffering. Paws for Hope is calling for provincial recognition of pets as family members in social services funding and aims to expand its foster services.
