The UK government prohibits live animal exports

Published May 21, 2024 at 4:00am

The UK government has enacted a new law banning the export of live animals, building on post-Brexit freedoms and reinforcing the country’s global leadership in animal welfare. The legislation fulfills a manifesto commitment by prohibiting the export of cattle, sheep, and pigs for slaughter from Great Britain.

This move aims to prevent animals from enduring stress, exhaustion, and injury during lengthy and unnecessary export journeys. Instead, the Act ensures that animals are slaughtered domestically in high-welfare UK slaughterhouses, emphasizing our nation’s commitment to animal welfare and contributing to the growth of the economy.
