A Landmark decision from a Winnipeg Court yesterday that has set a new precedent in animal cruelty sentencing.

On February 11, a Winnipeg couple responsible for the torture and deaths of over 90 animals was sentenced to 12 years in prison. This is the highest sentence ever handed down for such an offense in Canadian court history.

Notes from Humane Canada:

In delivering the sentence, the judge read from the Winnipeg Humane Society's Community Impact Statement. Humane Canada was proud to support our member organization in crafting this submission, which documented some of the vicarious trauma experienced by staff who fielded calls from the public as horrific details of the case emerged.
