A Calgary woman is facing charges after police responded to reports on Canada Day of a dog left in a hot car for over two hours at a home on Mount Copper Green S.E. in McKenzie Lake.

Upon arrival, officers found the dog, a four-year-old Alaskan malamute German shepherd cross named Lucky, unresponsive inside the locked vehicle, despite efforts by witnesses to alert the dog's owner. The officer broke a window to rescue Lucky, but tragically, she was found deceased. Kaitlyn Rose Folkins, 30, has been charged with injuring an animal and causing distress. Calgary Police Service emphasized that incidents like Lucky's death are preventable and urged the public to avoid leaving pets in cars during warm weather. The Calgary Humane Society underscored the dangers, urging people to prioritize their pets' safety by leaving them at home rather than risking fines, imprisonment, or harm to the animal.
