In a landmark move, Colombia has outlawed bullfighting, marking a significant victory for animal rights. This decision is the culmination of persistent efforts by ADI and the Colombia Sin Toreo coalition.
Despite resistance from the bullfighting lobby, the ban, initiated by Senator Esmeralda Hernández and Representative Juan Carlos Losada, garnered overwhelming support in Congress, passing with a 93-2 vote. The law, which includes a three-year transition period, aims to reassign bullring venues for cultural events and support industry workers in finding new jobs. This ban is a continuation of Colombia’s progressive animal welfare legislation, reflecting a societal shift towards more humane treatment of animals.
