Already this summer, Waterloo regional police have received 35 calls about pets left in vehicles on sweltering hot days.
Police confirmed the tally to 570 NewsRadio, adding five of those calls came in on Saturday alone, while a heat warning was in effect from Environment Canada.
Some of those calls came to nothing because the driver of the vehicle came back, officials said.
In other cases, the officers at the scene determined the air conditioning was running while the pet was inside the vehicle.
And some vehicles had been left in ‘dog mode,’ a version that keeps the vehicle cool inside while parked.
There was only one case since June 12 where a Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) officer had to rescue a pet from a hot car.
