We are heartbroken by the death of Peekachu, a 23-year-old beluga recently transferred from Marineland to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. Captured from the wild in Russia in 2004, Peekachu spent more than two decades in captivity. Her death is another painful reminder of the lasting consequences of keeping wild animals in captivity and the need for contingency and end-of-life planning for animals already in care.
