Horse euthanized on Day 9 of Calgary Stampede, marking the 4th animal casualty this year

A horse had to be euthanized after sustaining a fracture during the chuckwagon races, Calgary Stampede CEO Joel Cowley announced. Despite immediate emergency veterinarian care, the owner decided euthanasia was the most humane option.
This incident follows the euthanization of two other horses earlier in the event and a steer on July 8. Since the Stampede altered the chuckwagon race format to three-team heats for safety, four horses have died. Cowley emphasized the organization’s efforts to minimize such incidents, citing strict animal-friendly rules, ground-penetrating radar for track safety, and daily animal inspections. However, he acknowledged the need for continued improvements, stating, "We have more work to do." The Vancouver Humane Society reports 108 animal deaths at the Stampede since 1986.
