On the eve of World Animal Day, Humane Canada was dismayed that Marineland threatened the federal government saying that they may euthanize the 30 belugas at their facility unless the government pays for the animals or approves permits to ship them out of the country.
This action is the latest development in the ongoing, frustrating efforts to hold Marineland accountable for the animal welfare tragedy that has been unfolding there for decades. Humane Canada helped create Bill S203, which banned the captivity of whales and dolphins in Canada in 2019, and continues to work with the federal government to enforce this law, including urging Ministers not to grant export permits to Marineland.
We are in contact with the Ford government, urging them to seize the animals, take control of the land, and ensure proper care for the whales. Over the past five years, we have offered Marineland expert assistance to find the most humane solutions for the animals, but these offers have been declined or ignored. Marineland is responsible for the health and safety of the animals in their care and has had years to transition them appropriately as they seek to sell their property.
Marineland must be held accountable.
