Montreal SPCA Reports Surge in Animal Abandonment

Published Jul 2, 2024 at 4:00am
The Montreal SPCA has experienced a significant rise in animal abandonments since the beginning of the year and is urging the public to help find homes.
Over 200 animals were dropped off in the first four months, and the shelter was already at full capacity before the July 1 moving day. Executive Director Laurence Massé says the shelter is overwhelmed, with economic factors, particularly inflation, driving the increase in abandonments. The situation has strained the shelter's resources, prompting calls for adoptions, foster families, and donations as short-term solutions. Massé emphasizes that legislative changes are needed for long-term solutions.
