Severe Housing Shortage: Winnipeg Humane Society Faces Capacity Crisis

Published Jul 9, 2024 at 4:00am
The Winnipeg Humane Society has implemented a temporary intake freeze due to a capacity crisis, currently housing over 250 animals in the shelter and 260 in foster care.
The organization is only accepting sick or injured animals and has halted owner surrenders. Daphne Hee, manager of adoptions, attributes the crisis partly to the rising cost of living, noting that over half the cats were surrendered due to unaffordable vet care. The Humane Society offers financial assistance programs, including an emergency food bank and low-cost vet care. To promote adoptions, they are offering reduced fees: $25 for adult cats, $100 for kittens, $50 for large breed adult dogs, and $150 for puppies.
