Did you know that more than 60% of Canadian households have cats and dogs, with over 70% considering them family members? Yet, tenants with pets face systematic discrimination and struggle to find suitable rental housing. This discrimination not only impacts individuals and families but also contributes to significant mental health challenges and housing insecurity.

When tenants are allowed to keep their beloved pets, they experience lower levels of anxiety and depression, fostering a happier and healthier community. Pets also play a crucial role in building a sense of belonging and community, often serving as social bridges between neighbors.

It's time to push for nationwide policies that protect renters and their pets. Together, we can advocate for pet-inclusive housing aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, promoting well-being and reducing inequalities. No one should have to choose between their home and their furry family members.

Ontario has taken a proactive step by voiding any "no pet" clauses in tenancy agreements under the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006. We believe it's time for a nationwide Canadian Renters' Bill of Rights that includes a specific provision for companion animals, ensuring that tenants with pets are no longer unfairly excluded from rental housing.
